Description: This course will review the fundamental elements of the tissue engineering paradigm, that is biomaterials, biomolecules, and cells. Topics covered will include synthetic biomaterials, calcium phosphates, engineered protein biomaterials, signal expression in engineered tissues, pluripotent stem cells, hematopoietic and mesenchymal stem cells, nanobiomaterials and nanotechnology strategies, and biomimetic approaches. The course will further explore the enabling engineering technologies that are harnessed to recreate the structure and function of native tissue microenvironments. Additional topics covered will include mechanical conditioning, micropatterning, drug delivery, gene therapy, cell encapsulation, co-culture systems, 3D printing and bioprinting, bioreactors and shear forces, vascularization of engineered tissues, biomedical imaging of engineered tissues, and multiscale modeling. Finally, the course will conclude with a discussion of the applications of tissue engineering and cover topics related to interfacial tissue engineering and tumor tissue engineering. Cross-list: BIOE 620, CHBE 620, CHBE 406.
