FALL 2017
SECTION ONE: 19TH CENTURY FRENCH OPERA/OPERETTA
Follows Parisian opera culture through the nineteenth century, from Auber's reinvention of grand opera in the 1820s, through the satirical operettas of Offenbach in the 1850s, and finally to the impact of Wagner on Parisian opera at the end of the century.
SECION TWO: MUSIC MEANING INTERPRETATION
This course will take three cornerstones of the Western Classical tradition - the Bach B-minor Mass, Beethoven late string quartets, and Debussy piano preludes - as case studies to explore questions of musical meaning and interpretation.
