Description: Advanced study in selected topics in music history of the 19th and 20th centuries. Topics may vary. Please consult with the department for additional information. FALL 2016: Course considers opera in the late 19th century as it intersects with conceptions of aesthetierealism. Composers to be studied include Wagner, Verdi, Puccini and Gustave Charpentier. SPRING 2017: MUSI 529.003 Post-Bop: Jazz’s Golden Age This seminar will focus on the bebop revolution and its impact on the development of jazz, exploring the variety of musical styles that emerged in the postwar years and placing them in their cultural and political context. Students must be able to read music. MUSI 529.004 Russian Opera An in-depth study of selected operas by Glinka, Mussorgsky and Tchaikovsky, including the historical and literary sources. We will also consider the debates about aesthetics and musical composition that formed the context for the emergence and development of Russian opera. Repeatable for Credit.
