Description: Emphasis will be placed on issues regarding the design, synthesis, evaluation, regulation and clinical translation of biomaterials for specific applications. An overview of significant biomaterials engineering applications will be given, including topics such as ophthalmologic, orthopedic, cardiovascular and drug delivery applications, with attention to specific case studies. Regulatory issues concerning biomaterial will also be addressed. Assignments for this class will include frequent readings of the scientific literature with occasional homework questions, one midterm and cumulative final, a group project, a seminar report and individual presentations. In addition, graduate students in BIOE 631 will have additional exam problems and an additional research paper. Cross-list: BIOE 431. Mutually Exclusive: Cannot register for BIOE 631 if student has credit for BIOE 431.
