Description: The 19th century in France was not just the era of the realist novel but also of realism's uncomfortable "other" - the fantastic tale. This will be a discussion course devoted to works by Merimee, Maupassant, Nodier, Gautier, Balzac, and Flaubert - stories "behind the story" of the 19th century. Recommended Prerequisite(s): FREN 202.
