Description: Introduction to numerical methods with applications in Earth Science using Matlab and COMSOL. A brief introduction to programming in Matlab will be followed by hands-on exercises centered on the following topics: linear equations; interpolation; optimization; data fitting; integration of ordinary differential equations; two point boundary value problems; partial differential equations in one spatial dimension (Matlab, finite differences); partial differential equations in two spatial dimensions (COMSOL, finite elements). Recommended Prerequisite(s): MATH 211.
