Description: This course explores literary monsters throughout history to understand how they create cultural identity through negotiating fear, horror, and anxiety. We will investigate monsters as metaphors for racial, sexual, and religious identity, and look at how scientific advancement and shifting attitudes toward cultural otherness impact how we think about monstrosity.
