Description: Four exemplary novels - Balzac's "Le Pere Goriot," Stendhal's "Le rouge et le noir," Flaubert's "Madame Bovary," and Zola's "Nana" - will provide the core of this course as we reflect on the realist novel as a form, on the preoccupations of the 19th century, and on the art of reading closely.
