Description: Survey of late Ottoman history from Napoleon's invasion of Egypt thorugh the "long 19th century," the empire's demise in World War I, and emergence of post-Ottoman nation-states in the Middle East and Balkans. Topics include reformism, imperialism, national and religious identity, social and economic change and cultural interaction. Special focus on modern Turkey.
