Description: Survey of Latin pastoral, with its idyllic country sides, singing shepherds, and lovely laments. Readings drawn from Virgil's Eclogues, Calpurnius, Siculus, Nemesianus, and early Christian pastoral. Principal focus will be stylistic and thematic aspects of individual poets. Later history of pastoral, particularly in English tradition, will also be examined.
