Description: Class examines race, ethnicity, religion, and civic society. Focusing on American congregational communities (church, temple, or mosque) in considering migration, citizenship, identity and transnationalism on the historic transformations of non-native, ethnic churches and the Black Church. Discussions on assimilation (and its failure) will include the rare phenomena of multi-ethnic/racial congregations. Cross-list: SOCI 320.
