Description: This course will focus on the concepts of law and design in biology, relating debates within the life sciences to core problems in philosophy of science. We will examine the role of scientific laws in biology, and the relation between law and design in biological theories, explanations, and experiments. Readings will include key primary sources (e.g. Aristotle, Darwin, Mendel, Burnet) as well as contemporary literature in philosophy of biology.
