Description: Mapping German Culture. The literature of the High Middle Ages is the first since antiquity to probe the hazards and potentials of romance between men and women, as well as single-sex friendship and love. This course will show how the literary ideal of love emerged in a society that was torn apart by war and rivalry. The poems and stories we will read belong to the treasures of medieval literature from the German lands. Taught in English. Cross-list: HUMA 330, MDST 335, WGST 330.
