Description: The foundations of important linguistic ideas and currents in the classic work of 19th and 20th century linguists, with reference to their influence on modern theories. Includes discussion of the neogrammarians, Saussure, Sapir, Jespersen, Bloomfield, Whorf, American and European structuralist, and Chomsky. Taught as a pro-seminar. Cross-list: LING 503.
