This course will be mathematically rigorous coverage of the fundamentals of thermodynamics with applications drawn from contemporary bioengineering problems. Topics covered include thermodynamics of self assembly, the hydrophobic effect, polymer and membrane phase transitions, membrane transport, cell mechanics, electromechanical coupling in biological systems, nonequilibrium thermodynamics, open systems and statistical mechanics.
