Description: War movies and TV shows shape the ways in which their viewers understand history, the nature of war, and at times their own identity. This influence makes critical consumption of the war genre paramount. In this course, students will watch selected movies or shows, such as HBO’s Band of Brothers, Elem Klimov’s Come and See, and Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down, and then participate in class discussions connected to that week's topic. Through this process students will develop their individual ideology on the purpose and quality of war media, whether war media can in practice be 'anti-war', and will be able to examine the influences on and the kind of propaganda, tropes, and stereotypes present in war media. At the end of the course, students will pick a piece of war media and analyze it using all of the tools developed in class.
