Description: This course examines generative artificial intelligence from a media studies perspective. From this vantage point, generative AI is a new kind of medium and a technological force transforming media’s production, circulation, and consumption. To make sense of these two dimensions, this course is divided into two units. First, “AI as Media” situates generative AI within broader media history including the popularization of social media and the expansion of the internet’s now global footprint. Second, “Media in the Age of AI” uses the tools of media studies to analyze everything from AI-generated “slop,” to AI-assisted animation, to defiantly anti-AI art.
