Description: This course examines how issues surrounding food and health have been represented and contested by ordinary Americans, food justice activists, health authorities, food manufacturers, the popular media, and advertisers. It considers three key questions: 1. What counts as “nutritious”/healthy food? 2. How do race, ethnicity, and class function in American ideas about food and health? 3. How does the food industry figure into debates about food and health?
