Description: This interdisciplinary course offers an introduction to French theatre. Moving from a classical 17th-century masterpiece to modern and contemporary pieces, students will go beyond literary study to analyze theatrical works in their socio-political contexts. The French plays studied in this course have been widely performed in translation, and class time will be spent on considerations of linguistic and cultural adaptation. The course will culminate in the rehearsal and performance of chosen scenes. Cross-list: THEA 280.
