Description: This course examines clothing as an important, yet often taken for granted, part of social life. We will explore how culture, the global fashion industry, social status, and one’s position in global society shape people’s experiences, practices, and beliefs surrounding clothing—and, in turn, how these practices shape society.. Key themes include: 1) identity and the self; 2) fast fashion and global capitalism; 3) secondhand clothes and the environment. Students will read and discuss scholarship about clothing production, consumption, use, disposal, and waste. The course will also include experiential learning activities, including workshops and fieldtrips. Mutually Exclusive: Cannot register for SOCI 338 if student has credit for SOCI 231.
