Description: This course is designed to enable the student to gain an in-depth understanding of the state-of-the-art technologies used in carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS). Topics to be covered include the role of CCUS in the energy transition, engineering basics of CO2 capture, transportation, and subsurface storage in saline aquifers, CO2 utilization in enhanced oil recovery in oil and gas reservoirs and conversion to useful chemicals, geologic characterization and CO2 subsurface storage capacity estimation, post-injection CO2 monitoring techniques, application of CCUS in the decarbonization of the power, steelmaking and cement industries and subsurface CO2 storage as CO2 hydrate. This course will include a term paper where the student will be able to explore a topic within CCUS in more detail under the guidance of instructors. Cross-list: EEPS 657, CHBE 657. Recommended Prerequisite(s): MATH 101/102 or equivalent; PHYS 101 or equivalent; CHEM 121/122 or equivalent. Mutually Exclusive: Cannot register for EEPS 457 if student has credit for EEPS 657.
