Description: Taught in French, this course explores how artificial intelligence is transforming the theory, practice, and future of translation. Designed as a hands-on lab for advanced students of French, the course combines close attention to language, style, culture, and meaning with practical training in contemporary translation technologies. Students will work with machine translation, large language models, glossaries, translation memories, quality assurance tools, and captioning workflows while learning how to evaluate, revise, and ethically use AI-generated output. Rather than treating AI as a replacement for human judgment, the course emphasizes the translator’s role as editor, critic, cultural mediator, and language expert. Through projects in literary translation, cultural journalism, localization, terminology, post-editing, and a brief audiovisual unit, students will develop advanced French-language skills alongside marketable technical fluency. No coding is required. Students will leave the course with a portfolio that demonstrates linguistic sophistication, ethical AI literacy, and practical translation experience relevant to fields such as technology, media, publishing, international work, and graduate study.
