Description: Modern society depends strongly on the resources extracted from the earth. As the world advances technologically and as the human population continues to grow, that demand will only become stronger. In this course, we will investigate where the resources necessary for a modern functioning society comes from, the geology of those areas, extraction techniques, and the geopolitics surrounding those resources. Some resources we will consider will be metal ore deposits (gold, copper, etc.), battery deposits (lithium, cobalt, rare earth elements), hydrocarbons, and water. We will also discuss the climate impacts associated with extraction. Cross-list: EEPS 437.
