Description: This course will explore those stories “behind the story” of the 19th century—that strange and often misunderstood genre, the “fantastic tale.” Reading such writers as Gautier, Balzac, and Maupassant, we will discuss this genre's anxieties about madness and machines, misbehaving objects, and especially about women and their bodies. Taught in French.
