Description: Do you know that although Indigenous peoples comprise just 5% of the world’s population, 80% of the world’s remaining biodiversity are found within their ancestral lands? Indigenous environmental movements have been critical to protecting endangered species, fighting extractive industries, transitioning to more sustainable economies, and protecting some of the most carbon-rich places on earth. This course is aimed to (1) introduce specific case studies of Indigenous leadership, knowledge, and innovation in environmental protection initiatives; (2) equip students with skills they need to critically analyze and compare various Indigenous environmental movements; and (3) engage students in cultivating healthier ways of relating to land and Indigenous communities.
