Description: This seminar looks at the art of Colonial Latin America, specifically the viceroyalties of New Spain and Peru, with a focus on colonialism and its impact on visual culture. It considers interactions between Indigenous and European cultural traditions and explores the cultural, historical, social, economic, religious, political, racial, and cultural contexts and functions of this art. Topics to be studied include Indigenous art forms and their change under colonial rule; race and mestizaje; Latin American Catholicism; national identity; urbanism; portraiture; Neoclassicism and buen gusto; and the link between art and the rise of Independence movements.
