Description: This class will explore the value of close looking: of immersing ourselves, slowly and carefully, in individual works of art. To do so, we’ll meet frequently in local museum collections and spend much of our time doing just that: looking and reflecting. We’ll also read and discuss a selection of essays that demonstrate the kinds of formal, historical, and philosophical insight close looking can generate. Material covered will cut across cultures and periods and be tailored to students’ individual interests.
