Description: Maya Art and Architecture introduces students to the art and architecture of the Classic-period Maya. The course will look at the religious, historical, social, economic, and political context(s) and function(s) of Maya art and architecture and how the Maya elite used art and architecture to further their interests and power. Furthermore, we will study the Maya writing and calendrical systems and their relation to a Maya worldview, as well as topics such as the Maya ballgame, the role of women in Maya art, and the Maya collapse.
