Description: This course focuses on the challenges of defining gender, race, and identity in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean, or the Global South as this area is also known. The nations of the Global South are newly industrialized or in the process of industrializing and have had to battle the widespread effects of colonialism and globalization. Students will investigate the pervasiveness of stereotypes in literature, film, popular culture and the media in western and non-western contexts. We will examine theories from the Global South to avoid the simplification of Eurocentric analysis. Taught in French.
