Description: Polluted environments host distinctive microbial communities that can either attenuate, exacerbate, or cause contamination. This course will survey the primary literature on the identity and activity of microorganisms in a variety of contaminated environments. Topics that will be covered include, but are not limited to, oil spills, acid mine drainage, groundwater arsenic, and uranium bioremediation. This primarily discussion-based course will blend introductory lectures, journal article discussions, and student presentations. Cross-list: EEPS 639. Mutually Exclusive: Cannot register for EEPS 439 if student has credit for EEPS 639.
