Description: VISUAL CULTURE IN REVOLUTIONARY & POSTREVOLUTIONARY CHINA (ca. 1949-PRESENT) ***** Exploration of propaganda and avant-garde art in modern Chinese visual culture. The course will cover a wide range of materials (e.g. paintings, installation arts, propaganda posters, comic books, and films). Issues addressed include: art as social movement, the notions of political and artistic avant-garde, the structure of authoritarian art, and the paradox of counter-discourse. The course will maintain a global and comparative frame of analysis, drawing on scholarship on Soviet and Third Reich German visual cultures as well as Euro-American mass culture and avant-garde art. ***** Also listed as HART 470.
