Description: DECLARING THE NEW: THE POLITICS OF THE AVANT-GARDE IN LATIN AMERICA ***** This course considers the literary, historical, and political implications of an artistic practice based on novelty. Can novelty jolt a complacent society into action? Is novelty even possible in the twentieth century? What does it mean to be new in Latin America? Readings ranging from Borges to Huidobro to the Chilean neo-avant-garde of the 1970's and 80's. ***** PREREQUISITE: Third-year Spanish or permission of the instructor.
