Description: The purpose of this course is to introduce the student to the fundamentals of the hydrologic cycle, surface water, open channel flow concepts, and water resources. The course will introduce concepts related to the hydrologic cycle in urban and natural watersheds, rainfall runoff and hydrograph response, overland and channel flood routing, open channel flow, and the basics of floodplain. At the end of the semester, we will also cover the current state of flood policy, flood disasters, and discuss innovative strategies for tackling flood-related issues and adapting to changes in flood risk over time. There will be significant emphasis on applying and solving the governing equations, calculations and models to analyze water balance, and hydrologic and hydraulic response to severe rainfall events. Student participation and a completion of a HEC-HMS modeling exercise will be expected. Case studies will be presented and discussed near end of the class. Cross-list: CEVE 509. Mutually Exclusive: Cannot register for CEVE 412 if student has credit for CEVE 509.
