Description: Since its inception in the 1950s, rock & roll has been one of the most popular, influential, and controversial musical styles. Emerging from earlier African American musical traditions, it has since evolved into a diverse and powerful force that has continuously challenged societal norms, pushed musical boundaries, and reflected the rebellious spirit of multiple generations. This course offers a comprehensive survey of rock music, tracing its roots and exploring its diverse offshoots, including psychedelic rock, classic rock, progressive rock, punk, heavy metal, grunge, alternative, indie, and more. Alongside detailed examinations of rock's stylistic and practical elements, this course will engage with broader cultural and historical questions, such as rock's role in social change, its impact on youth culture, and its responses to technological innovations in music production and distribution.
