Description: The nation-state—one of the most distinctive political structures in the world—is increasingly being challenged by the notion of who belongs in it, what languages they should speak to demonstrate they are part of the nation, and what (language) rights can be granted to migrants and refugees in a world that is increasingly on the move. The objective of the course is to achieve a thorough understanding of language and migration dynamics and their effect on the integration of diverse linguistic resources and the development of cultural identities in an increasingly globalized world. The proper analysis of language in the context of migration, requires the consideration of both language-internal and language-external aspects of migration. Therefore, the readings assigned for this course will focus on the analysis of four foundational concepts associated with the overall theme of language and migration: the nation-state, identity, culture and multilingualism. 300-level Spanish competence recommended. Recommended Prerequisite(s): 300-level Spanish competence recommended.
