Description: Course will analyze the essence of language against the essence of dialects to determine (i) the logical and linguistic rationale behind judgments about language, (ii) social and political factors that lead to various decisions, and (iii) the role of popular beliefs on traditional views of proper language use. Previously offered as SPPO 350. Mutually exclusive. Credit cannot be earned for SPAN 350 if student has previously taken SPPO 350. Recommended prerequisite(s): Third-year Spanish or permission of instructor.
