Description: This course will treat the history of the supernatural from the biblical materials on the miraculous "sign," through the birth of the "supernatural" in medieval Christianity and the canonization of saints, to the mediating categories of the "preternatural" and the modern "paranormal." Comparative categories and materials in other cultural and religious complexes will also be treated. Graduate students will be required to read the entirety of SUPER RELIGION, which is vol. 9 of THE MACMILLAN HANDBOOK SERIES ON RELIGION. This volume represents a cutting edge of the revisioning of the category of the supernatural. They will also be required ti write a research paper approximately twice in length of the undergraduates. Graduate/Undergraduate Equivalency: RELI 219. Mutually Exclusive: Cannot register for RELI 519 if student has credit for RELI 219.
