Description: This course explores the mythology of the black woman’s body in the
French/Francophone imaginary, namely in the literary rewriting of the "primitive" in the long 19th-century. Students will examine how this eroticized body bears traces of its social, political and cultural codification and symbolizes anxieties born out of the colonial encounter. Recommended Prerequisite(s): Completion of one 300-level course.
