Description: SECTION 1: Examines case-study analyses and theories of tonal organization from 1500-1700, focusing on the relationship of music theory to compositional practice, the scope and nature of modal theory, the early recognition of major/minor tonality, and modern-day scholarship on modal theory and early tonal style. SECTION 2:This seminar will focus on the BeBop revolution and its impact on the development of Jazz, exploring the variety of musical styles that emerged in the post war years and placing them in their cultural and political context. Students must be able to read music. Repeatable for Credit.
