Description: A thorough explanation of the methodologies used for solving heat transport problems in micro- and nanosystems. Phonon, photon and electron transfer fundamentals. Solid-solid, solid-liquid boundary conductance, solid-liquid boundary conductance, thermal properties semiconductors and metals. Microchannel heat transfer, Nanofluid heat transfer. Three-Omega temperature measurements and related solution to thermal wave equation. Thermoreflectance experiemntal method. Molecular dynamics and lattice dynamics numerical methods. Applications and design problems related to thermoelectric devises, thermal diodes, solar cells, solid-state laser, and thermal barrier coatings. Pre-requisite(s): MECH 481 or equivalent or instructors approval.
