Examination of Christian and Jewish communities in the Islamic world from the rise of Islam to the Ottoman Empire. Topics include the "dhimmis" (protected peoples); social and economic life; communal organization; and interplay of religious laws and political authority. Discussions focus on modern historiogrpahy and Muslim communities under Christian rule.
