Description: 20TH CENTURY BRITISH LITERATURE ***** This course surveys major writers and topics in twentieth- century Anglophone fiction, including colonial and postcolonial Irish, Indian, and South African authors. We will discuss the role of the empire and its demise in the construction of the British literary canon, changes in the conception of the novel in the period, and the relation of class, sex, and race to literary form and style. Together with the novels we will read relevant essays in narrative theory, so the course will also serve as a practical introdcution to methods and issues in the interpretation of modern and postmodern fiction. Authors include Conrad, Forster, Joyce, Lawrence, Woolf, Greene, Beckett, Orwell, Waugh, Murdock, Coetzee, Winterson, and Rushdie. ***** INSTRUCTOR: Lamos, Colleen
