Description: CIVILIZING MISSIONS ***** Graduate course on the development of "civilizing mission:" empires, nations, and religions have legitimized territorial and spiritual conquest and validated the suppression of subject customs, cultures, and religions. We will explore how civilizing missions became an integral part of imperial, religious, and national ideologies. Readings to include (in translation) modern historical, geographical, legal, ethnographic,religious, and literary texts.
