Description: APPROXIMATION OF DYNAMICAL SYSTEMS ***** In this course, dynamical systems described by sets of linear, differential or difference equations will be considered. The goal is to approximate the behavior of such systems by that of simpler ones, the complexity being measured by the number of state variables needed to describe them. For such approximations to be useful they need to preserve certain properties of the original system and lead to a quantification of the approximation error. Most existing methods fail to satisfy these requirements. The major difficulty is that the problem is non-convex. We will present the theory of approximation in the so-called Hankel norm, which addresses both issues.
