Description: THE MODERN CITY ***** Over the past two centuries, cities have transformed human consciousness, culture, and society in profound ways, giving rise to "modern life." This seminar examines the history and sociology of the modern city in the U.S. The focus will be on understanding the processes shaping urban development and their larger significance. Topics will include the city as experience and perspective, the city as social form, and the uses of space to solve social problems.
