Description: SOCIAL AND POLITICAL THOUGHT IN POSTWAR GERMANY ***** This seminar investigates the reconstruction of German social and political thinking between 1945 and 1989. Among the topics are: the "end of history" in functionalist sociology (Schelsky, Gehlen); Erns Bloch's reformulation of Marxism; literary representations of the Nazi past (Grass); and the state socialist present (Heiner Mueller); reconsiderations of the public sphere (Kluge, Negt, Haug); Christa Wolf's feminist critique, and Niklas Luhmann's systems theory.
