MDST 444 - MEMORY IN MIDDLE AGES

Long Title:
Department: Medieval Studies
Grade Mode: Standard Letter
Course Type: Lecture
Credit Hours: 3
Description: MEMORY & COMMEMORIZATION IN THE MIDDLE AGES ***** Memory and commemoration are in general terms described as intentions, attitudes, acts, and media that should prevent oblivion of individuals and communities (beyond death). In this way, they determine thought, emotions, and actions in fundamental ways. They possess universal dimensions that go back to antiquity and are influential up to the present. Today they are often driven out either into the atomistic sphere of individual rememberance, into the institutional realm of politics, or into the secluded world of museums. However this suppression enhances their importance for our life. ***** Also offered as HIST 444.
