HIST 434 - ISLAM & THE WEST

Long Title:
Department: History
Grade Mode: Standard Letter
Course Type: Lecture
Credit Hours: 3
Description: ISLAM & THE WEST ***** Beginning with the Crusades and continuing through the Ottaman period, and ending in the modern era this seminar will investigate how identities are formed and reshaped through contact with other cultures, specifically how the ideas of the West and Islam were developed in association with one another. Rather than treating them as stable categories, we will seek to understand how traditions are "invented" by tracing the relationship between civilization and despotism, freedom and tyranny, religious tolerance and holy war. *****
