Description: ORIGINS OF THE ENGLISH NOVELS ***** DISTRIBUTION COURSE GROUP 1 ***** The most important literary innovation of the eighteenth century was the birth of the novel. We will examine the modern social and cultural forces crucial to and inextricable from this watershed development: the emergence of liberalism, conservatism, feminism, class, secular culture, the sex/gender system, individualism, and the separation of public and private spheres. ***** INSTRUCTOR: Ellenzweig, Sarah
