Description: IMAGES OF CONTEMPORARY FRANCE ***** The course will deal with the sociopolitical and intellectual history of post-war France. Based upon texts by Borne, Edmiston, and Dumenil, it will also examine various analyses of French culture by Valery, E. Faure, Mendras, Barthes, and Lipovetsky. The course will cover such topics as the advent of the Fifth Republic, decolonization, May '68 and political dissent, modernization and the postmodern condition, and France and the construction of Europe. ***** Enrollment is limited to 20.
